The Farrell girls started off the afternoon with with a solid win over the Avonworth Antelopes, final score 29-54. Best wishes to the Farrell girls as they move on.

The gym was packed and you could feel the intensity as the teams took the court. The Grape Picker student body was out in full force and added much to this playoff game.

The first quarter started off with NE in possession of the ball, however Farrell would be the first to shoot as NE turned the ball over on a walking call. Farrell missed their first attempt, NE hauled down the board. The first points of the game came from NE #20 Rouse at 7:10 as he nailed a trey - wow can he shoot. The fans loved it. Farrell missed their next attempt and NE #20 Rouse made quick work of adding 2 uncontested down the lane. NE #5 Kirsch then add 3 more as he was fouled shooting. Both teams turned the ball over on bad passes, where NE ended up committing a foul on the floor. Farrell's #21 Jackson added 2 more from the line as he was fouled while shooting. Score 9-11 NE. NE #00 Szwejbka added to their lead as he hit a long 3. The Grape Pickers added 7 points on their first 3 possessions before Farrell could call time with the clock reading 5:59, score 13-23. Stubbs then committed his own foul on the floor followed by his teammate #21 Jackson fouling #20 Rouse while shooting. Rouse hit both from the line and NE was up 25-16. Farrell's #21 Jackson added 3 points, hitting a shot plus the foul. NE #20 Rouse had the next 5 of their 7 points as he hit another trey and had a great scoop shot under the hoop. What a move. NE #10 Traina had the other 2 points under the hoop. Farrell's #3 Holden hit for a 3 pointer then team mate #2 Stubbs came up with a steal ending with Holden at the line shooting 2, making only 1. Farrell #2 Stubbs then went coast to coast adding 2 more. NE time at 2:24, score 25-32. Farrell committed a foul on the floor and NE turned the ball over on a bad pass. Farrell's #3 Holden missed a 3 pointer, Farrell board, Farrell charge, NE board. Farrell would score the next 3 points, but NE #10 Triana would close the quarter with 2 more from the line, putting NE up by 6 at half, score 28-34.

NE started the second half with the ball, where Farrell came up with a blocked shot and scored first with a quick 2. NE #00 Szwejbka scored their first points of the half. Farrell's #2 Stubbs hit for 3. NE #10 Triana made a nice move and added 2 more. Farrell's next possession saw them crashing the boards as they had at least 4 put backs before the ball went out on NE. They then had 3 more put backs before #21 Jackson ended up with a 3 point play off the shot and foul. NE back to #20 Rouse for 2 points. Farrell was able to close the gap and tied it up at 42 with 3:21 left to play in the third quarter. NE #10 Triana then came up with a three point play as he was fouled shooting. This would be #2 Stubbs 3rd foul and he came out of the game with 3:20 to play in the quarter. Farrell hit for 2 points and #2 Stubbs came back in at 2:55. Stubbs was back out at 2:48 as he picked up his fourth foul. NE then missed their next shot, in and out. Farrell managed to take the lead with 2 points straight to the hoop. #5 Kirsch answered with a layup. NE called time with 1:51 on the clock, score 46-47. Final points of the quarter came from Farrell's #3 Holden as he was fouled while shooting a 3 pointer. He only converted 2. The quarter closed with Farrell leading by 1, outscoring NE by 5, score 48-47.

Quarter four, Farrell ball, Stubbs on the bench. NE causes jump ball, NE possession. The first 6 points of the quarter all came from the line. NE scored first from the line as #3 Meehl hit 1 of 2. Farrell's first points from the line came as a result of #4 Platterborze's awesome behind the back pass, ending with his team mate being fouled and hitting both his shots. NE #5 Kirsch added 2 from the line and Farrell #21 Jackson added 1, making 1 of 2. NE forced a pass causing a turnover and ending with Farrell #3 Holden connecting for 2. NE missed their next attempt and Farrell had to call time at 5:24 as they were trapped in the corner. Score 53-50. Farrell's Stubbs checked back into the game. Let the 3 pointers start flying. Farrell and NE both missed 3 pointers but then NE #10 Triana hit, then Farrell's #2 Stubbs hit, then NE hit again. Time out NE with 3:47 left to play all tied up at 56. I think this is when I heard someone say, "I'll be paying another $6 when I leave." What a game. Farrell came out and turned the ball over, NE converted into 2 points. Farrell then connected for 2 of its own. NE #5 Kirsch was fouled shooting and hit both free throws. Farrell missed their next attempt, NE board and time out at 1:32, score 58-60. The final ticks saw NE at the foul line several times, Farrell #2 Stubbs fouling out, and Triana stealing the ball going out of bounds yet flipping the ball ahead to his team mate. What a heads up play. Reminded me of the end of the 3rd quarter against Girard. Although Farrell outscored NE in the 3rd, NE was able to make up for it in the 4th and won by 6, which was their lead at the half. Final score 60-66.

They say games can be won and lost at the foul line. I am not sure of the percentages, but it seemed as though NE took full advantage of those shots, where Farrell struggled from the line today. That is not to take away from the Pickers win as even those few times they didn't hold the lead, they were still hustling. NE makes such great heads up plays. I thought Farrell would have a slight size advantage, but it never came into play. I really enjoyed watching #4 Platterborze come in off the bench for Farrell. What a game!

High scorers: #21 Jackson led the Steelers offense with 18 points. The Pickers were led by #20 Rouse with 21 points and #10 Triana adding 20.

On to Sharon where NE will meet up with Jeannette at 7:00 PM Wednesday.

Jeannette 67 Girard 35

Packed parking, could only mean a packed house at Sharon High School tonight as the Jeanette Jayhawks took on the Girard Yellowjackets.

The opening tip went to Jeannette as did the opening shot from the Jayhawks #22 Grant. Girard came up with the board off the missed shot. Wow can he jump. Jeannette's #3 Hall caused a turn over as Girard was bringing the ball up which was finished with the first of three dunks from Jeannette's #1 Pryor. Time out at 5:05, Jeannette 18, Girard 8. Jeannette answered with another 2. Girard was held scoreless in the last 2 plus minutes of the half and Jeannette increase their lead for a score of 26-10 at the half.

Jeannette opened the third quarter with the the ball and continued to build on their lead. Girard was held scoreless until 3 minutes into the quarter when they hit a three pointer. Jeannette's #1 Pryor showed us his dunking ability 2 more times in the 3rd quarter, the last to finish out the quarter. Score at the end of three was 45-22.

The fourth quarter started with Girard's #15 Rickard taking it to the hoop and picking up 2 points, however Girard was outscored in the final frame by 9. The final 3 minutes or so saw both teams finishing up with players from their benches. Final score Jeannette 67, Girard 35.

Girard was still in this after one, as Jeannette didn't capitalize on Girard's turnovers. Girard was getting open looks at the hoop, they just couldn't get anything to fall. I was impressed with their continuous effort and they are to be commended for a great season. I was looking forward to seeing Jeannette. Several people had told me about #1 Pryor before I got there. He's good, but they definitely have the total team effort going on. He was held scoreless in the 1st quarter, yet they were still up. Loose balls tonight typically ended up with Jeannette, they are quick.

I hear Farrell and North East play Saturday, should be a great game.

North East 49 Girard 32

I arrived just at the end of the 2nd quarter as Girard was under their hoop trying to score. I looked up to see the score was 16 -17 Girard. Wow. Close, low scoring game.

I found a seat in a packed McComb and waited for the second half to begin.

Girard started the half with the ball and turned it over. North East took a shot, but missed, Girard board, North East steal finished with a foul and 2 shots from the line - both made. Girard took the ball down and had a nice drive but was unable to come up with the points to finish it off. North East's next possession was a long 3 point attempt. Girard attempted thier own three only to see the ball go in and out. North East scored their first points from the floor as #00 Szwejbka hit for two inside. Girard called time with the clock reading 6:19. North East's #00 Szwejbka was called on a blocking foul. Girard's #54 McDonald put up another 3 only to see it go in and out. The Pickers were unable to score on their next two possessions, however, Girard hauled down both boards an thier #31 Droll finally connected from three point land and #23 Ferrick was called on a charge. This was Ferrick's 3rd foul, he came out with 3:43 left to play in the 3rd. The Jackets #15 Rickard hit for 2 points, which would be the last they were to score of the quarter. The Pickers answered with two of their own and then #00 Szwejbka hit a loooong 3. Timeout was called with 2:16 to play, score North East 25, Girard 22. The Jackets went to #15 Rickard for a 3 point attempt. The Pickers answered with 2. Girard then turned the ball over on a 5 second call on the inbounds. Girard timeout called at 1:15 North East 29, Girard 22. The Pickers next possession saw #3 Meehl hitting a trey. As the final seconds were ticking down the Pickers #10 Triana made an awesome heads up play. He stole the ball and as he was going out of bounds lobbed the ball forward to his own player who was breaking down the court to add the last 2 points of the quarter. North East outscored Girard by 8 in the 3rd and never looked back. Score at the end of three North East 29, Girard 22.

Girard's #23 Ferrick checked back in to start the 4th quarter. North East came out and made quick work of adding 4 more to their lead. Girard time out at 7:13. Score 38-22. #23 Ferrick at the line hit both shots. North East hit 2 points inside. The Pickers #00 Szwejbka was called on a foul away from the ball. North East timout at 6:05, score 40-26. Girards's #31 missed the next shot and North East came up with the board. North East's # 3 Meehl hit yet another 3 pointer and the Picker fans went wild. Ferrick then committed his 4th foul and came at with 2:46 left to play. He came back in with just over 2 minutes left in the game. Girard's #15 Rickard hit a long 3 and Girard called time with 1:52 left on the clock, score 43-31. Girard's #23 Ferrick fouled out to a standing "O" from his fans with the clock reading 1:28. The last minute saw both teams letting their benches finish up the game. Final Score Northeast 49, Girard 32.

This was obviously a hard fought game in the first half. I don't know what the diffence was between the halfs as I missed the first but North East came out on top. I know Ferrick was in foul trouble in the middle of the 3rd quarter and they just couldn't get anything to fall. I love watching both of the teams play and have watched them so much I don't even need a program anymore!

I don't typically chose a player of the game, but tonight I would give the BigSkinny player of the game honors to The Pickers #10 Triana for that awesome steal and lob pass as he was going out of bounds. Wow! The Pickers whole team can be commended for their phenominal passing abilities. They really are fun to watch.

Good Luck!

Girard 64 Farrell 55

Out to the House of Thrills in Meadville tonight where Girard and Farrell met in an exciting AA Semi-Final match up. Intense sums this night up best, from the passionate fans to the action on the court. The Yellowjacket fans were out in full force tonight including the G I R A R D guys (I hope they had jackets and hopefully BIG got a picture of them).

Girard took the opening tip. The Yellowjackets #54 McDonald started off the scoring with 2 points in the paint at 7:31. The Steelers turned the ball over on thier first possession. Girard's #15 Rickard scored the first 2 of his 12 in the first quarter on a nice jumper from outside. Farrell's #3 Holden answered with 2 of his own and started the Steelers scoring at 6:26. The next six points were rattled off by Girard's #15 Rickard. Farrell time out at 4:43, score 10-2. Farrell came out, took the ball to the hoop and was fouled, hitting only the first from the line. Farrell showed a press which gave the Yellowjackets a little trouble but they were able to overcome and lead after 1 with a score 17-9.

Farrell came out shooting and scored the first 7 points of the second quarter, including a 3 pointer and one. Girards's #54 answered with threepointer of his own. The Yellowjackets next possession resulted in an over and back call as the Steelers defense was intense. Girard hit a trey at the end of the quarter to lead at half time 30-20.

Girard opened the second half with a missed shot from 3 point range. The Steelers made quick work of feeding #2 Stubbs a nice lob pass - scoring 2 uncontested. Girard turnover, ended with the Steelers at the line for 2. Score 30, 24. Girard's #10 was called on a foul on a loose ball. The next points came from the foul line with Girard's #23 Ferrick hitting 2 and Farrell's #3 Holden making one. Girard turned the ball over again, finished by a nice layup from the Steelers. Girard called time with 5:20 on the clock, score 32-28. Meanwhile, the Steelers #21 Jackson was hit with his 4th foul at the 3:31 mark and was taken out. Girard called time with 1:54 left to play, Steelers now up 32-33. Farrell was called on a charge with about 1 minute to play in the 3rd quarter. Intense. No points for Girard on their next possession. The Steeler's #2 had a sweet move underneath and finished at the line for one. Girard's first bucket from the field came as time ran out in the 3rd, with a nice dump to #23 Ferrick. The Steelers outscored the Jackets by 9 in the 3rd, but Girard was still up by 1. Score 38-37

Farrell's ball to start the 4th. #22 Johnson missed a shot from 3 point range but was fouled on the play. He made all 3 foul shots. Score 38-40. Girard's #23 Ferrick had a chance to tie it up from the line but missed both shots. Farrell had a huge rebound, took the ball down and #2 Stubbs hit a 3. Girard's #15 Rickard anwered with 3 of his own. Farrell called time with 6:08 left to play. Score 41-43 Farrell. Farrell came out and added to their lead with nice jumper from #4 Platterborze and the foul. Girard's #15 Rickard answered with another 3. Farrell and Girard both turned the ball over of their next possessions. Girard's turnover ending in a layup from Steelers #2 Stubbs. Girard time out, score 44-48. #23 Ferrick took it to the hoop and was fouled, however he missed the foul shot. The Steeler's #21 Jackson came back into the game at the 4:31 mark. Stubbs then hit a loooooong 3 pointer. Steelers up 47-51. Girard's #31 Droll nailed a 3 pointer followed by #15 Rickard adding another trey. Farrell turnover and timeout with 2:46 left to play, score 53 - 51 Girard. Farrell came out pressing and Girard turned the ball over. The play ended with Girard's #23 committing a foul and the Steelers at the line - only picking up 1 as the first shot was missed. Farrell was called for a foul and #23 Ferrick knocked both shots down. Farrell missed thier next attempt and Girard came up with the board. #23 Ferrick hit for 2 uncontested down low. Farrell turned the ball over and fouled on their next possession, which Girard converted into 2 points from the line, score 59-52. Although the final score was 64-55 this game came down to the wire. Farrell fouled towards the end for possession sake.

The Steelers were led by #2 Stubbs with 20 points while #3 Holden added 15 of his own. #15 Rickard led the scoring for the Yellowjackets with 29 with his teammate #23 Ferrick adding 15. I sent my husband, Kevin out to find one so I would not miss a minute of the action. He returned sometime later with a very defeated look and I knew the mission had been a failure. All the programs had been sold out. What? He said he even looked in the tops of garbage cans. I don't know how many of these were in print, but definately not enough, as these were a hot commodity.

The North East Fans came out in droves tonight. They packed one whole side of the Hammermill Center and had fans on the other side of the gym. We were lucky enough to sit by some great Grapepicker fans tonight, they were very friendly and helped me with their players names due to my no progam problem. Thank you! They even wrote their starters down for me!

The Prep fans added to their numbers when the Girard fans joined them.

I had not seen Mercyhurst all season and I had not seen North East since the tipoff tournament in Saegertown. I was very impressed with how they worked together as a team so early in the season - without a doubt they have built on what I had previously seen.

The Grapepicker starters were Szwejbka, Kirsch, Rowe, Trianna and Meehl. The Lakers started N. Arrigo, Hvedzda, Crane-Huston, Chojnacki and Macrino. Not having a program and the specific stats it appeared to me that The Lakers may have had the size advantage over the Pickers.

The opening tip went to Prep but resulted in a turnover. The first points of the game came at 7:22 from Prep. Northeast was called on an over and back much to the dismay of their fans. The refs conveened, met breifly with the coaches and the called was overturned. North East was then called on a foul at 6:36, the Laker missed one, score 0-3 Lakers. North East's first points came at 6:03 and would not stop as they continued to take the ball to the hoop the rest of the half. The Pickers threw a press at the Lakers half way through the first quarter. Prep quicly called a timeout with the score 9-7 Northeast. Mercyhurst turned the ball over on thier next possession and North East converted 2 with a fast break. I am amazed by North East no look pass skills. Mercyhurst had the ball for the last shot, but missed. Score at the end of one, 15-8 North East. For all you stat people there were 4 attempted 3 pointers 3 from Prep and 1 from North East - all missed (0%). Mercyhurst hit 3 from 2 point range, attempting 6 (50%) where North East tried 14 making 7 (50%).

The second quarter started with a missed 3 point attempt by Mercyhurst. The first points came on a turn around jumper from Northeast at 7:24. Mercyhurst next two possessions ended in turnovers, which the Pickers turned into 5 points. Timeout Lakers at 6:20, score 22-8 North East. Out of the time out - another Laker turnover resulting in North East #50 LaFuria dunk - and the fans went wild! Thanks to the Picker fans again for helping with LaFuria's name. The Picker defense held the Lakers scoreless for well over 2 minutes into the second quarter. #50 LaFuria came up big again with an awesome blocked shot and then he hit the ball off a Laker player to go out of bounds. What a heads up play! North East had a not so typical turnover which the Lakers were unable to convert to points and the Pickers called time out at 2:49, score 26-15. The Pickers were called on back to back fouls and the half came to a close with some ribbing of the officials over a questionable no call commited on North East. Officiating is a tough job. Stats, Prep was 3 for 5 from 2 point range, 1 for 2 from 3 point range. North East was 6 for 10 and 1 for 1 respectively. Score at the end of two 30-16 Northeast.

Halftime - I spotted a program rolled up in someone's back pocket and thought briefly how nice it would be to have. Rest assured I did not take it and resigned myself to scour the stands at the end of the game for any remains of a program I could get my hands on. It is always nice to know the players names and stats. It was great to meet some more of the North East fans. I spoke with several of them at the half. One of them asked what other games we were covering tonight. I responded just the one before this, but failed to say why. Big and Skinny were busy tonight working at the BIGskinny Hot Dog Shop, which opens February 22nd.

North East started the second half with the ball and scored at 7:16, 2 points and the foul. Mercyhurst was unable to score on their possession. North East took the ball down and hit a trey. Mercyhurst commited a charge at 6:06, I am sure the North East player will be feeling that today. The Pickers started to pressure the inbounds pass, Mercyhurst timeout at 5:05, score 37-16. Mercyhurst's first points of the quarter came at 4:04. North East called timeout at 2:31 after Prep made a shot plus the foul. During the timeout I spotted a program laying down by the concession area - it looked to be just left there. Score! I leaned over to tell my husband it was there but it was gone before he even saw it. Uuuugh! Stats North East went 3 for 8 from 3 point land and 3 for 7 from two point range, Mercyhurst went 1 for 3 and 3 for 6 respectively. The quarter closed with a score 46-26.

North East started the 4th quarter with the ball, took a charge, called timeout at 6:55 and then committed 4 straight turnovers which converted to fouls on #50 LaFuria and #10 Traina. This was LaFuria's 4th foul and he came out of the game, he ended up fouling out with 2:46 left to play in the game. It looked like Mercyhurst was going to the foul tactic and committed some very hard fouls on the Pickers, however with just under 2 minutes left to play in the game both teams went to their benches. Great moments for younger players to build on. Stats North East went 14-17 from the charity stripe while Mercyhurst only hit 2 for 9 in the last quarter. Meryhurst went 3 for 7 from 2 point range and 2 for 4 from 3 point range. The Pickers went 3 for 4 and 0 for 2 respectivley. There were over 20 fouls in the second half between both teams. The final score was North East 66 Mercyhurst Prep 41.

Let The Program search begin. We sat towards the top of the arena - surely we could spot some tattered program left behind from up there. None. I finally resigned myself to never knowing all the stats on these players. We began our descent and then like a ray of sun beating down, I saw it - a program laying on top of one of the brightly colored seats in the lower section. Would it be there by the time I got there? Yes! Finally I was in possession of The Program, thank you to whomever left it behind. Thank You!

Mercyhurst was led by #12 Hvezda with 26 points. The Lakers #14 Chojnacki added 7 more. The team shot 42% for the game. I wish I would have seen the Lakers in action before tonight. The Pickers just proved to be too much for them tonight. North East was led by#10 Triana with 22 points. The Pickers #20 Rouse added 19 and #00 Szwejbka added 10. Northeast was very impressive at the beginning of the season and looked great tonight. They are a fun team to watch. I love the no look passes and the players tipping the ball to their teamates on loose balls and rebounds. The Lakers numbered was Picked tonight. Outsized or not The Pickers came up with a great win tonight. Reynolds must have come out shooting as the first quarter was about half way over and they were up six nothing. Girard kicked it into gear and end the first quarter up 13 - 8. Reynolds would never regain the lead.

Reynolds started with the ball the second quarter but came up empty. #31 Droll for Girard opened the scoring by hitting a trey. Reynolds answered quickly with a three pointer of thier own. After exchanging 2 point baskets, Girard's #23Ferrick fed #15 Rickard an awesome back door pass. The Girard fans loved it. Reynolds called a timeout with the clock reading 4:11, the score was Girard 24, Reynolds 13. Reynolds called another timeout at 1:33 with Girard up 30 - 13. The half time score was Girard 33, Reynolds 13.

Reynolds came out in the third and started with a nice alley oop. However the Raiders called time with the clock at 3:07 as the Yellowjackets had outscored them by 10 points. Score 50 -20. Three pointers were plentiful from a host of Yellowjackets in the third quarter. Score at the end of three saw the Jackets on top 57-29.

Reynolds did not throw in the towel and their #23 Laverty had several long three pointers in the second half. A timeout was called at 6:28 in the 4th quarter with the score 59 - 35. Girard was forced to call timeout at 2:33 as they couldn't get the ball in bounds. The last minutes of the quarter saw several players come in off both benchs. The final score was Girard 77 and Reynolds 48.

I was unable to get a picture of the book so unfortunately I don't have the high scorer information. I am sure Reynold's #23 Laverty was right up there, he barely missed from beyond the 3 point line. The Raiders center, #20 Conley added a few 3 pointers of his own.

I really enjoy watching Girard's #23 Ferrick. He is definatley a force to be reckoned with. He's a rebounder, sets the pick to make the roll happen and just all out hustles. His presence is felt when he is on the court. Girard is playing well together as a team and has a great group of fans supporting them. Good luck!

General McLane 60 Meadville 57 - What Happened In the 4th Quarter?

I travelled out to Meadville to see the Bulldogs host the General McLane Lancers in what I anticipated to be a great rematch. These two teams met on January 10th were the hosting Lancers won 58-69. The teams both entered tonights match up with winning records in Region 5, Meadville 6-1, their only loss was to the Lancers while the Lancers stood at 7-0. I arrived to see the last quarter of the JV game in which the Lancers had no problems with the Bulldogs. Lancers 70- Meadville 48.

To my surprise it was Senior night in Meadville. Meadville not only honored each of their senior players, cheerleaders and managers but also acknowledge each of the senior members of the Lancers team. Nice touch and best wishes to all the seniors!

Meadville's student body was only the second I have seen this year that came ready for a great game. Sorry no pictures, Big had the camera at Cambridge's Senior Night.

The opening tip went to the Lancers as did the whole first half at the packed House Of Thrills. The first points of the night came from McLane's #41 Walker in the paint. Meadville had a very difficult time inbounding the ball off the Lancers made shots. Several balls thrown in were picked off by the Lancers or were stolen off the press. Meadville did seem to make some adjustments and were able to get the ball up the court, however it seemed as though when they did they couldn't buy a basket. They had some nice drives and turnaround jumpers, but nothing was falling through the hoop. The score at the half was McLane 37 Meadville 22.

Seeing these two teams play before I had hopes that the second half would bring out a fired up Bulldog team. They managed to play with the Lancers in the third quarter, but were unable to make much of a dent in the Lancer lead. Due to my motherly duties, children at grandma's and school tomorrow, I decided to leave at the end of the third quarter. The score was McLane 49 Meadville 35.

What happened in the 4th quarter? I was shocked when I caught the scores on the news and found I may have missed one of the best quarters of basketball so far this season (double OT in the Cambridge Saegertown matchup was good too). Meadville managed to come back, but fell short by 3 points. I knew Meadville could play with McLane and was upset that I had left. It is never over till it's over.

The Lancers played like a well oiled machine. They have great passing, can take the ball to the hoop but can also shoot from outside. Their press was tough to deal with and was part of the difference in the first half. The Lancers had four guys with double digits, Walker with 17, Mulligan with 12, DiVito with 11 and Wreh-Wilson with 10.

Meadville had some great moments. #24 had an awesome block that had everyone in the gym in awe. It came towards the end of the first half and put some energy into the team. It was awesome to hear the crowds response. Freshman #23 Hamilton is a huslter and made some things happen while on the court. The Bulldogs were led by Phillips with 20 points, while Hamilton added 14 and Barton 13.

I can't wait for the playoffs to start. I won't be leaving early again!

Saegertown 50 Cambridge Springs 32

These rival teams met last in a double overtime win by Cambridge at home. I of course had to travel out to Saegertown tonight to this exciting backyard rival rematch. The 18 point spread does not do this game justice as it was a much closer game than the final score would indicate.

Those crazy Saegertown student body fans were again out in full force. I do believe they seem to be growing in numbers as the season progresses. It is amazing the things you can see at a basketball game.

Saegertown went with their regular crew, Wetsell, Z. Beatty, Campbell, K. Beatty and Mondi to start. Cambridge however started a very young team with junior, Spaid; two sophomores - Dunton and Kargol and two freshmen - Kondzielski and Lewis. I found Cambridge's starting line up interesting.

Saegertown's #3 Ben Wetsell was honored prior to the start of tonights game by his teamates(the all important assist men) as they presented him a plaque for scoring his 1,000th point on Dec. 28th. Congratulations Ben!

The opening tip went to the home town Panthers who missed a long outside shot which was rebounded by the Devils. The Devils turned the ball over on their first possession, leaving Saegertown to strike first on a fast break. The Panthers then committed three back to back fouls on the floor. Cambridge turned the ball over again which was finished off by an attempted dunk from the Panthers #4 Beatty. The Devils added their own points from a drive by #10 Young. Saegertown added their next points from the line as the Devils #24 Sinclair picked up his first foul. Cambridge committed another turnover on their next possession, however Saegertown was called with another foul on the floor and then turned the ball over with 3:50 remaining in the opening quarter. The Devils called time with 3:27 left to play, score 9-6. Cambridge would manage to turn the ball over 4 more times and add another foul before the quarter would come to an end. Saegertown held the ball with for over a minute for the last shot, but turned it over and committed a foul with 5.8 seconds remaining. Cambridge was lucky considering all their turnovers off of bad passes that typically Saegertown converts to points on the break to still be within four with the score 12-8 to end the first.

Cambridge started the 2nd quarter with a three from Young. Saegertown answered quickly with 2 of their own in the paint. Cambridge managed to turn the ball over again. The Devils called time at the 5:09 mark, score 19-15. Cambridge played a nice diamond and one defense (at least that is what Big told me it was called) and shut down the inside play of Saegertown, however Saegertown has several guys who can shoot the long ball too. Cambridge only turned the ball over twice in the second quarter which Saegertown managed to convert into 2 points. The half ended with Saegertown being up by one, 25 -24. This had the makings of another nail bitter.

The 3rd quarter saw Cambridge in possession. They turned the ball over at the 7 minute mark which #22 Beatty converted to 2 points off the break. The Panthers outscored the Devils by 7 points in the 3rd quarter. This period saw very little action as just over the 3 minute mark with a 34 - 26 lead Seagertown decided to hold the ball for the last shot???? After holding the ball over 2 minutes they passed it around the perimeter until they took a shot and missed with 20 seconds left. Cambridge's #15 Lewis came up with the board. Score at the end of three 34-26.

Cambridge turned the ball over on their first two possessions of the 4th quarter. The Panthers and Devils both had their share of turnovers and fouls in the final frame. The Devils never recovered from their 3rd quarter deficit and the Panthers went on to win this one 50 - 32.

Saegertown's #22 Z. Beatty was on tonight. He led their scoring with 17 points. He was able to hit a couple three pointers when their was nothing open inside. #3 Wetsell added 10 and #1 Amy added 8 more. #4 K. Beatty also added some nice clean blocks in the paint tonight.

Senior #10 Young led the Devils tonight with 15 points. He took the ball to the hoop tonight as did senior#23 Green who added 7. #22 Spaid also added 4 and several nice rebounds. Freshman #15 Lewis continues to add a spark to the team when he is on the court.

This wasn't the backyard rival rematch I had anticipated, but Saegertown has a nice looking team and Cambridge has a good team to build on.

Big was there with the camera, be sure to check out the Saegertown Super Fans! Pictures here:

http://www.bigskinnyonline.com/SaegCamb.htm

Next big rematch, Meadville and McLane at Meadville, February 4th. Both teams went into tonights matchup unbeaten in Region 5. The Dogs had an overall record of 9-4 while the Lancers stood at 11-2.

The opening tip went to McLane. McLane's #41 Walker shot first and missed, Meadville rebound. Meadville took the ball up the court and turned it over on a 5 second call. McLane shot a long 3 and missed but had two boards. McLane called timeout at 6:54 to avoid turning the ball over going out of bounds. The score 0 -0. The first points of the game came from #11 O'Neal at the 6:34 mark. Meadville answered with their own points in the paint. The Lancer's attempted another 3 pointer but it bounced off the backboard - Meadville's ball. The Dogs #14 drove the lane and ended the play with an offensive foul. Meadville went with a press and caused a Lancer turnover. Meadville had their own turnover on a bad pass. The next two points came from the Lancers at the foul line - score Meadville 2 - McLane 4. McLane added a 3 pointer to up the score to 2 - 7. Senior #12 Geiger came in off the bench and gave the Dogs a spark they needed. Meadville had 4 fast breaks and took their first lead 10 - 7. The tempo of the game changed in the last few minutes of the first quarter as Meadville's #12 came in and got them running. End of the first quarter Meadville was up 15 - 11.

McLance started 2nd quarter with the ball, but Meadville scored first with what seemed to be their 7th fast break in a row. McLane's #12 answered with a three pointer. Meadville turned the ball over on their next possession and the Lancers converted it to 2 points. The Lancers took the lead back at the 5:42 mark, 17-18. Meadville tied the game up at 5:03 with hitting one of two foul shots. The Lancers turned the ball over and Meadville took the lead back. McLane's #41 answered with a strong 2 points in the paint. Meadville hit a three to make it 23-20. Time out was called with 3:32 left to play in the quarter. The Lancers ended up the quarter with two 3 pointers. They were fouled bringing the ball up with .1 second left in the half. They hit both shots and lead 27-30.

McLane and Meadville both came out in the 3rd and turned the ball over on their first possessions, McLane was able to convert on Meadville's turnover. The Lancer's #41 had a power rebound under his own hoop and put it back for 2. Meadville called time with the clock reading 6:57 with the score 27-34. Both teams committed fouls on their next possessions which were converted to points from the line. McLane showed press on the in bounds and Meadville turned the ball over. Meadville called time at 4:52 with the score 31-41. Meadville turned the ball over on the in bounds again. McLane held the ball for the final shot in the quarter, #41 missed and Meadville tried for a shot over half court and missed. The Lancer's outscored the Dogs by 8 and the third ended with a score of 39 to 50.

McLane's #41 committed his 4th foul to begin the 4th quarter and headed to the bench. Meadville's shooter missed both foul shots but they came up with the rebound only to turn it over on a walking call. Meadville called timeout at 7:15 after the Lancers had scored 2 points and Meadville committed a turnover and foul. Meadville switched up to man to man defense. The Lancers were shooting on every foul by the 6:25 mark as Meadville had committed its 7th team foul. Meadville took a fast break off of a Lancers missed shot and scored two plus a chance a the line that was missed. McLane's #41 came back into the game at the 4:36 mark. Meadville kept up with the press and got a couple of turnovers. In the end McLane proved to be too much for the Dogs tonight. Final score 58-69.

Big and I were very impressed with the play of #12 Geiger off Meadville's bench, ankle injury and all. He just gives the team a boost when he is out there. #14 Phillips led the Dogs with 20 points tonight. The Dogs press caused several turnovers and bad passes, however they had a hard time getting the trap. Their size inside forced the Lancers to an outside game in the first half. Freshmen #23 Hamilton who added 12 points and fouled out has a definate presence for the Dogs with several more years to improve. They played a very even game excluding the 3rd quarter.

The Lancers were led by #14 Mulligan with 26 points, 10 of which came from free throws as he went 10 for 12 from the line. Lancers #12 DiVito added 11, #33 Steffey and #41 Walker both added 8 of thier own. I was impressed with #11 O'Neals ball handling with the constant pressure Meadville gave him bringing the ball up the court. He definately kept his composure.

Meadville will host this exciting rematch at the House of Thrills on Monday night, Feb. 4th. I anticipate another great game!

Girard 67 Cambridge Springs 41

I ventured out and met Big tonight in Cambridge Springs to see the Blue Devils host the Girard Yellow Jackets. This was my first opportunity to see Girard in action, although Big had given me some low down as he saw them beat Fairview in a close one December 11th.

A very close JV game was finishing up when I arrived. The final score was Girard 32 Cambridge Springs 29.

Tonights opening tip headed right out of bounds and went to Girard. Girards first possession was a long 3 pointer. Swoosh! Cambridge committed three straight fouls to open up the game and called a quick timeout at 5:51 the score was Girard 5 Cambridge 0. Cambridge was held scoreless until 4:44 into the 1st quarter with Sinclair hitting for 2. Girard had several turnovers including a 3 second call, an offensive foul and a carry towards the end of the quarter. Cambridge was struggling on the boards, very few follow up shots. Cambridge's Chris Young hit a 3 pointer from over half court at the buzzer to end the 1st quarter - swoosh! Game on! Girard 9 Cambridge 7.

Girard's #54 opened up the 2nd quarter with a 3 pointer. Both teams seemed to rack up some fouls with Cambridges's #24 Sinclair committing his 3rd foul at the 4:35 mark in the second, which Girard converted into 2 points. Cambridge's #11 answered with a 3 pointer and a Girard timeout followed at the 3:44 mark. The score Girard 17 Cambridge 13. The Devil's called their own timeout at 1:36 with the score 22-15. The quarter ended with the Yellow Jackets up 27 to 19.

Girard came out in the second half ready to go and proved to be too much for Cambridge outscoring them by 15 points . Cambridge turned the ball over on their first 4 possessions of the half which Girard converted to points. Girard's #23 Ferrick was a rebounding machine, many coming off his own shots. The Yellow Jackets have several guys who can shoot the ball from outside. At the end of three Girard was up 50 to 27.

Both teams went to their bench in the 4th quarter with a final score of Girard 67 Cambridge 41.

Girard seemed to have a very disciplined team and host of outside shooters. Their leading scorer was sophomore #15 Rickard with 17 points, Big had told me about him. He spent some time on the bench due to foul trouble early on and still led them in scoring. Senior#23 Ferrick the Rebounding Machine added 13 points as did McDonald.

Cambridge was led by sophomore #11 Kargol with 10 points followed by #22 Spaid with 8. The Devils showed some great defense in the first half, however the sting of the Jackets proved to be too much tonight.

Girard had matching shoes - and socks to boot tonight.

More Photos here: http://www.bigskinnyonline.com/GirardCambridge.htm

Saegertown 66 Cambridge 72 Double Overtime

Whew. Double overtime. I sit at the computer in silence but can still hear all those faithful fans cheering these two teams on. No idle conversations tonight. Just lots of fans cheering.

I spotted the infamous Panther fans as soon as I pulled into the parking lot tonight in Cambridge Springs. They even bring it on the road. Once entering the gym in the final minutes of the JV game (Saegertown 25, Cambridge 43) I found a packed house. You could feel the emotion as these backyard rivals were about to go head to head. I'm a firm believer that you throw out the rankings and statistics when it comes to backyard rivals and I was not disappointed. I am not one to keep up with the records, but I have seen both these teams in action this year and went knowing that Cambridge would have their hands full, but anything could happen. Add into this backyard rival mix, Skinny who has coached the Saegertown starters and now coaches a younger Cambridge team. Process all this because we haven't even tipped the ball yet.

Saegertown went with their five I have seen start all season. Cambridge went with a much different and younger line up, including a freshman #15 Dustin Lewis. The opening tip went to Saegertown, however Cambridge was the first to score with a three pointer. Cambridge came out ready to play and hit the boards early while Saegertown racked up 6 fouls in the first quarter compared to Cambridge's one, which is alot if you think of playing double overtime. Cambridge hit at least three 3's in the first quarter but fell short 13-14 at the end of one.

The second quarter saw the Devils rack up the fouls and the Panthers held them scoreless until the clock read 6:26, which came in the form of foul shots. Saegertown called timeout with 4:49 left to play in the half, score Saegertown 21, Cambridge 17. Saegertown took advantage of the Cambridge fouls and a couple turnovers and led at the half 31, 27.

The Devils had possession at the start of the 3rd. Fouls and turnovers held both teams scoreless until 6:37 when Saegertowns #3 Ben Wetsell hit for two. As in the first quarter, Saegertown racked up at least 5 fouls before the quarter was even half over, with a technical called at the 4:50 mark. Score Panthers 35, Devils 27. Cambridge also had their fair share of fouls with starter #22 Colton Spaid being assessed his 4th before the quarter was even half over. The Panthers held the Devils scoreless until 3:35 left to play in the quarter. Devil timeout at 3:16 score Saegertown 39, Cambridge 30. The Panthers started to build on their lead and closed out the quarter leading 45 to 36.

Cambridge struck first and fast in the 4th quarter with a 3 pointer. The panthers took no time to answer with 2 of their own. Saegertown's #4 Kyle Beatty had a nice block but ended the play with his fourth foul. Cambridge put a run together and Saegertown called time score Panthers 47 Devils 43. Cambridge hit from 3 point land again - score 47, 46. Cambridge called time at 4:16 score all tied up at 48. Fouls, foul shots and time outs was the story of the last 1:54 of regulation with Panther #4 Kyle Beatty fouling out. Cambridge was up by as much as four at one point, but #3 Wetsell scored a 3 pointer and sent us to OT - score 57, 57.

What? OT? This backyard rival wouldn't end in regulation, but in double overtime. Cambridge's #24 Adam Sinclair fouled out and the first points of overtime came on foul shots by Cambridge at 2:08. Wetsell answered with 2 from the field. Cambridge time out at 1:19 score 59, 59. Cambridge held the ball down to :27 and turned it over without even shooting. Likewise, Saegertown held the ball to :07 turned the ball over on a travel call. End of 1st OT score 59 all.

Saegertown took the tip and turned the ball over on a travel. Freshmen #15 Dustin Lewis drove the lane and scored for Cambridge. The final 2 minutes can be summed up with fouls, turnovers, timeouts, nail biting and fans on the edge of their seats. Cambridge made their foul shots down the stretch and were up 70 -64 with :17 seconds left to play. Final score Saegertown 66 Cambridge 72.

Kudos to the officials tonight who kept the game in hand even with all the emotions backyard rivals bring. There were some very tense and very loud moments.

Ben Wetsell led the Panthers tonight with 23. Zach Beatty added 14 and Jared Campbell 10. Saegertown ran the ball when they had the opportunity and were able to score as I have seen them do before. I enjoy watching them every time I see them.

Cambridge was led by #10 Chris Young with 21 points. #24 Adam Sinclair added 15 and freshman #15 Dustin Lewis added 11 more. Lewis came in off the bench the last time I saw the Devils in action and started tonight. He is definitely one to watch and did I mention he is only a freshman. Cambridge worked hard for this win tonight and proved that anything can happen on any night.

Matching shoes tonight? Who knows - I could hardly keep up with the action.

Whew!

Cambridge 40 Maplewood 71

Big & I headed out to Cambridge Springs tonight to check out the Cambridge's Blue Devils take on the Maplewood Tigers. This was our first trip out together.

The Tigers took the opening tip down the lane where Cambridge was called on a shooting foul. Maplewood converted the first of two. The Devils took their first possession and turned it over which was followed up by a Tiger turnover. Cambridge got things going and at the 5:26 mark the Tigers called for time with the score Devils 8, Tigers 3. Maplewood put their own run together and the Spa answered with a time out with 1:52 left to play in the first quarter, score Devils 12, Tigers 10. The quarter closed with Cambridge up by two, 16 to 14.

Maplewood started the second quarter driving the lane just as they did in the first, but this time it ended in a charge. The Tigers like the fast break and were looking for the open man down the court - usually #44 Aaron Bryant - he was also posting low and making the shots. Cambridge was held to one point and called time with 4 minutes left to play in the half; score Cambridge 17, Maplewood 25. Maplewood was crashing the boards both offense and defense. Cambridge saw little of the second shot on offense. The half ended Cambridge 21 Maplewood 31.

Maplewood forced a turnover on Cambridge's first possession of the second half. Cambridge had a hard time taking care of the ball tonight, turnovers off of forced passes and guys not coming to the ball. Maplewood continued with the fast break, worked the ball in the paint and increased their lead closing out the third quarter with a score of Cambridge 27 Maplewood 59.

The fourth quarter saw playing time for both benches, with the young Devils outscoring the Tigers. Cambridges #15 Dustin Lewis came in off the bench and did a great job. Final score Cambridge 40 Maplewood 70.

Cambridge spread their scoring out evenly with #10 Chris Young leading them with 10, #5 Tyler Dunton, #24 Adam Sinclair and #25 Michael O'Malley each adding 8.

The Tigers were led by inside man #44 Aaron Bryant who had 18 and I'm sure multiple rebounds. He did a great job working the post tonight. #21 Robert Cierniakoski and #22 Andrew Hamilton each add 12 more for the Tigers.

No concession stand trip tonight. Big did mention that it would be nice in our paperless money world if they accepted debit cards. Side note - even Big pointed out the nice black and yellow shoes some of the Maplewood players wore - they really took the uniform to another level.

Pictures from the game are posted at http://www.devilshoops.com/photos.htm

I can be reached at heather@bigskinnyonline.com

Saegertown 72, Cochranton 50

The Saegertown Panthers hosted the Cochranton Cardinals where as always the Panther student body was dressed and ready to go. Playing in Saegertown? These fans are definately something to check out.

Tonights first half was plagued with turnovers and time outs. The opening tip went to Saegertown and so did the first turnover. The Cardinals took advantage and struck first off the fast break. Saegertown turnover number 2. The Panthers were held scoreless until 6:35 when #3 Ben Wetsell sank a three pointer. Let the time outs begin. The Cards called time at 4:21. Saegertown timeout at 3:37 score Panthers 7, Cardinals 9. Saegertown timeout at 2:16. Cochranton timeout at :37 score Panthers 20, Cardinals 15. The first quarter came to a close score Panthers 22, Cardinals 15. Turnovers: Panthers 3, Cardinals 7.

The second quarter saw much of the same. Cochranton called timeouts at 6:11 with the score now Panthers 26 Cardinals 17 then again at 5:24 with the score 28 to 17. The Cardinals went on a 9 to 2 run. Followed quickly by a Saegertown timeout with 2:07 left to play in the first half. Halftime score Panthers 37, Cardinals 30. Turnovers: Saegertown 5, Cardinals 12.

Cochranton opened the second half with back to back turnovers which Saegertown converted into points. The Cards were held scoreless until 5:37 in the 3rd quarter. #3 Ben Wetsell led the Panthers attack. Saegertown was crashing the boards both offense and defense. Cochranton didn't see too many second shots and were still turning the ball over. Saegertown worked the ball around nicely and scored numerous points off the fast break. Guys were filling the lanes, keeping their heads up and finding the open man. Saegertown began to increase their lead and closed out the third with a score of 58 to 37.

Saegertown and Cochranton used their bench to finish out the fourth quarter. I was impressed by Panthers #15 Dylan Johnston a 5'4" sophomore who came in and kept the Panthers offense going. He moved the ball around well and saw the whole court.

Saegertown was led by #3 Ben Wetsell with 28 points, followed by #21 Jared Campbell and #22 Zach Beatty with 11 points each. #4 Kyle Beatty added 8 more, plus lots of boards and a couple very nice blocks. Saegertown is moving the ball around well and finding the open man. The Panthers capitilized on the Cardinals too many turnovers. The Cards were led#4 Andrew Boughner with 12 points and #24 Adam Roche with 11.

For anyone keeping track - there were no matching shoes tonight.

The Panthers held all the "Cards" tonight with a final score Saegertown 72 Cochranton 50.

Opening Night

Woo Hoo! Basketball season tipped off tonight in a “BigSkinny” way. We traveled to Saegertown where the Panthers hosted the Hickory Hornets, the North East Grape Pickers and the Commodore Perry Panthers.

The first game featured the Hornets vs. the Pickers where the Hornets definitely had their number “Picked” tonight. The opening tip went to the Hornets, who executed great perimeter passing. It was 7:02 before Hickory struck first. North East’s press seemed too much as Hickory had 6 straight turnovers – the 5th ending in a dunk. The score was North East 19, Hickory 9 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The second quarter brought no relief from the Pickers press. Fouls also played a roll in the second quarter. North East was shooting on every foul with 7:15 left to play in the quarter; however 12 of Hickory’s 20 points in the second came from the line. North East saw their fair share of turnovers in the second quarter too – at least 5. Hickory continued to work the perimeter while North East liked to drive the ball. Half time left us at Northeast 40, Hickory 29.

The third quarter saw more of the same. The quarter ended with a dunk from North East’s #50 Patrick Lafuria. North East 54, Hickory 32.

The fourth quarter saw Hickory’s David Lumpp fouling out with 4:36 left to play. Both teams went to their bench to finish out the game. Final score North East 76, Hickory 44.

High scorer for Hickory was junior, #23 Jordan Wilds with 12 points. He was the only Hornet to hit the double digits. Northeast had 5 guys chalk up double digits, with senior starter #3 Aaron Meehl and senior #50 Patrick Lafuria leading with 13 points each.

North East looked good. A few turnovers, but played well. Hickory had perimeter passing, but couldn’t get anything in the paint. Lots of hustle from both teams.

Second game was a Panther showdown, with the Saegertown Panthers hosting the Commodore Perry Panthers. As always, the Saegertown student body was fired up and ready to go. There was a foul called against Commodore Perry at the tip off. Saegertown scored the first 10 points of the game and the Perry Panthers were held scoreless until 6 minutes in the first quarter. The quarter ended Saegertown 23, Commodore Perry 4.

At the end of the second quarter the Saegertown Panthers were up 40 to 16 with Saegertown’s #3 Ben Wetsell racking up 12 points and his teammate #21 Jared Campbell adding 8. We left at the end of the second quarter to check things out at the Cambridge Springs tournament.

We arrived in Cambridge halfway through the 3rd quarter and the Devils were trailing, however they pulled out a 46-42 win. Congratulations Skinny! They will be playing against Greenville tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

My first night was awesome. No trips to the concession stand like Big and I’m not so technical like Skinny, but I can tell you that 3 out of the 6 teams I saw tonight had matching shoes! There is something about matching shoes that make an outfit come together. Sorry guys!

Also, kudos to the announcer at Saegertown, I am not sure who he is, but he did a great job! (That would be Bruce Stainbrook)

Heather can be reached at heather@bigskinnyonline.com
